It has been the weirdest feeling growing up my entire life and not knowing where I am from. Envying others that can trace back their ancestors centuries ago isn’t the most common thing I assume.
The AncestryDNA test was $89 with a coupon that I found online. I then paid about $10 for shipping. It took me a while to mail off the results, but I did send them off on about December 28th, 2016 and they marked it as received at their facility on January 6th, 2017. It was marked for processing on February 8th. And I finally received the results on February 17th! They were considerate with emailing me the status of my DNA test every step of the way. It did take them about 6 weeks, and their guaranteed time frame was between 6-8 weeks, so they were up to par.
Now that I know where I am from, I feel more centered within myself. One less thing that I don’t have to wonder about. One realization that I had was that my ancestors were definitelyyy slaves. It feels different knowing that as a concrete fact now, no more speculation. On the other hand, I am glad to be able to tell my kids their own heritage as they are growing up. They won’t have to wonder. And hopefully my future husband will know his roots as well, so we can trace it back together.
I am an African Queen. I want to research all of the countries that I am from. I want to learn my culture and my heritage. I want to try the foods, the clothing, the music, learn the dances. And most importantly, if God willing, I want to finally explore my homelands.
